Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is a modality treatment designed by PhD professor, researcher and therapist, Marsha M. Linehan. DBT focuses on transforming an individual’s behavioral responses from emotionally driven, compulsive, and self destructive into more mindful, aware and personally empowering choices. The approach works with clients by awakening awareness, self compassion and working with ones experience vs working against it through six core skills. Marsha directs clients and practitioners to employ observation, description and participation with non- judgment, mindfulness and effectiveness. DBT is designed to provide skill building in interpersonal effectiveness, emotional regulation and distress tolerance, through the practice and awareness position of a “wise mind,” and the intersection of rational mind and emotional mind. An ICCC therapist might discuss with their patient new thinking appropriately called, “radical acceptance.”
